If we take a game like WoW or a mobile game with lots of microtransactions and say that game had the same ammount of players engaging with the game, obviously that game will make a lot more money than Guild Wars 2. That's the business model Arena Net has chosen to appeal to a certain type of players.
Keep in mind - GW2 works a bit differently, there is almost no way to play with other people that is not beneficial for everyone. There is no mob tagging, exp and items are shared, even among people who aren't in a party. Harvesting nodes are individual to player, so you don't need to worry about fighting over them.
the problem is - learning the bosses and getting the kp to get in to pug groups. pretty hard to do that in a 1 hour intervall. I would say that GW2 is one of the friendliest games when it comes to people with weird schedules. There is plenty of solo content which can be explored when you are playing during odd hours.
